Authenticity of the Holy Quran

"This day we have completed your religion for you and perfected our favor upon you and chosen for your way of life Islam". (QS 5:3)

The Quran was revealed in Arabic to Prophet Muhammad(pbuh) through angel Gabriel(pbuh). The revelation occurred over a period of 23 years sometimes in brief verses and sometimes in longer chapters.

"We have not sent any Messenger except with the language of his people so he can make things clear to them."(QS 14:4)

Although the Quranic message is for the whole of humanity, the verses are more specifically addressed to those who understood the language (QS 54:17, 22, 32, 40)...emphasizing on appreciating what would have happened had it been in a language other than their mother tongue. This is proved in the following verses:

"So We have revealed an Arabic Quran to you, in order that you may warn the capital city and all who live nearby..." (QS 42:7)

Upon receiving the revelations, the Prophet engaged himself in the duty of conveying the message to his Companion through reciting the exact words he heard in their exact order. This is evident in his inclusion of even reciting the word 'Qul' or 'Say'(to the people, O Muhammad). For example, in Surah Al Ikhlas:

"(Qul) Say: He is Allah, the One and Only."(QS 112:1)

The Quran rhythmic style make it easy to memorize, just like nursery rhymes. Indeed, Allah SWT describes this as one of its essential qualities for preservation and remembrance.

"And indeed, We have eased the Qur'an in your tongue that they might be reminded."(QS 44:58)

The Prophet encouraged his Companions to learn each verse that was revealed and transmit it to others. The Quranic verses was also required to be recited regularly as an act of worship, especially during the daily fardh prayers(Solat). Through these means, many repeatedly heard the Quranic passages and the entire Quran was memorized verbatim(word for word) by some of the Prophet’s Companions. Among them were Zaid ibn Thabit, Ubayy ibn Ka’b, Muadh ibn Jabal, and Abu Zaid (Radhi Allahu anhum).

"And We have certainly made the Qur'an easy to understand and remember, so is there any who will remember?"(QS 54:17)

The memorization(hafazan) of the Quran emerged into a continuous tradition across the centuries, with Madrasa or Islamic Schools for memorization being established across the Muslim world.

In these schools, students learn and memorize the Quran along with its Tajwid(proper pronunciation), at the supervision of a master who in turn acquired the knowledge from his teacher, an ‘Un-broken Chain’(sanad) going all the way back to the Prophet. And Allah SWT Himself has promised to guard the Qur’an against corruption and concoction till the End of Day.

"Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian."(QS 15:9)

Wallahu'alam
